Grand Theft Auto V now exists in several versions: the “Expanded and Enhanced” edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the Enhanced and Legacy editions on PC, and the older PS4 and Xbox One versions. If your hardware supports it, the Enhanced version is the one to play, and existing owners can move to it for free on PC and, since June 2026, from PS4 and the digital Xbox One version as well.

Quick answer: play the PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC Enhanced version for better graphics, faster loading and current GTA Online support.

GTA 5 versions at a glance

Version Platforms Released GTA Online
Original PS3, Xbox 360 2013 Servers closed for these consoles

What the Enhanced versions add

  • Higher resolutions up to 4K and HDR support.
  • Ray-traced effects such as shadows and reflections (depending on mode and hardware).
  • Graphics modes that prioritize resolution or frame rate, with up to 60 fps on consoles.
  • Much faster loading thanks to SSD storage.
  • Improved textures, draw distance and traffic density.
  • On PS5: DualSense haptic feedback and 3D audio.
  • In GTA Online: Hao’s Special Works vehicle upgrades and the Career Builder for new players.

PC: Enhanced vs Legacy

In March 2025, Rockstar released GTA V Enhanced on PC as a free upgrade for existing owners. It brings the console improvements, including ray tracing and the GTA Online features of the current-gen consoles. GTA V Legacy remains available for players whose PCs don’t meet the newer requirements or who prefer the original version for mods. Both appear in your library, and you choose which one to launch.

Key points for PC players:

  • Enhanced has higher system requirements than Legacy.
  • GTA Online characters can be migrated to Enhanced; check Rockstar’s support pages for the exact process.
  • Many older mods were built for Legacy and may not work in Enhanced.

Console: PS4 and Xbox One owners

GTA Online stopped working on PS4 and Xbox One on December 16, 2024, though story mode remains playable offline. In June 2026, Rockstar announced a free upgrade from any PS4 version of GTA V and the digital Xbox One version to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, starting June 18, 2026, with story progress carrying over. Check the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store for current eligibility, as terms can change.

GTA+ and the story mode

GTA+ members can access a library of Rockstar games, which has included GTA V story mode on current-gen consoles. Our GTA+ guide explains what the subscription offers and whether it’s worth it.

Which version should you choose?

  • You own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S: play the current-gen version.
  • You play on a strong gaming PC: launch GTA V Enhanced.
  • You play on an older PC or love mods: stay on Legacy.
  • You only have a PS4 or Xbox One: story mode works, but Online is no longer available.

Getting ready for GTA 6

GTA 6 is coming only to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch, so if you are upgrading your console for GTA 6, you can also enjoy GTA 5’s best version in the meantime. See our guides on whether GTA 6 is on PS4 or Xbox One and the GTA 6 release date.
