Games Moving Away From GTA 6: Fable, Squadron 42 and More Delayed

Grand Theft Auto VI is still set for November 19, 2026, and the rest of the industry is getting out of its way. Over the past months, several big games that were planned for autumn or late 2026 have moved into 2027. Some studios say GTA 6 is the reason, others do not, but the pattern is clear: very few publishers want to launch next to Rockstar’s biggest release ever.

Games that moved away from GTA 6’s release window

Game Developer Old window New date Announced GTA 6 cited officially?
Fable Playground Games (Xbox) Autumn 2026 February 23, 2027 May 29, 2026 No
Squadron 42 Cloud Imperium Games Q4 2026 Q2 2027 August 27, 2026 Yes
Danganronpa 2×2 Spike Chunsoft 2026 January 14, 2027 September 9, 2026 No

Fable: Xbox wants its own moment

Xbox moved Fable from autumn 2026 to February 23, 2027. The official announcement did not name GTA 6. Xbox talked about giving the game a dedicated release window, and the game’s director later said he was happy to avoid what he called a chaotic late 2026 window. Most coverage, from Vice to Push Square, read the move as Xbox sidestepping Rockstar’s launch, and the timing makes that hard to ignore: Fable now lands three months after GTA 6, once the first wave of players has had time to play through Leonida.

Squadron 42: the one that said it out loud

Cloud Imperium Games pushed its single-player space game Squadron 42 from Q4 2026 to Q2 2027. In his Letter from the Chairman on August 27, Chris Roberts was the only executive in this group to point directly at Grand Theft Auto VI, saying the studio did not want to launch into the attention storm around Rockstar’s release. For a game that has been in development for more than a decade, avoiding a launch where nobody is paying attention makes sense.

Danganronpa 2×2: quiet move to January

Spike Chunsoft moved Danganronpa 2×2 to January 14, 2027. The publisher gave no official reason and did not mention GTA 6. It is a very different audience from Rockstar’s crime sandbox, but it still left a crowded November for a calmer January.

Why studios avoid GTA 6

The reasons are simple:

  • Player time: GTA games are huge. Millions of players will spend weeks in the story and then move to the online mode, leaving little room for other big releases.
  • Money: the Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition $99.99. Many players will budget for GTA 6 first.
  • Media attention: reviews, streams and social media will be dominated by Vice City for weeks. Rockstar says Trailer 2 was the biggest video launch of all time, with 475 million views in 24 hours, which shows the scale of the noise.
  • Retail and marketing: shelf space, store promotions and ad slots around launch will be expensive and crowded.

Is GTA 6 still on track for November 19?

Yes. Rockstar and Take-Two still list Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the launch trailer released on October 15 repeated that date. Pre-loading opens on November 12 for digital pre-orders and physical copies. There is still no PC version announced. For the full timeline of past delays, see our GTA 6 release date page.

Will more games move?

With less than four weeks to go, most late 2026 release dates are now locked, so another big move would be a surprise. Still, expect early 2027 to be crowded, with Danganronpa 2×2 in January, Fable in February and Squadron 42 in spring. We will update this list if more publishers change their plans. In the meantime, catch up on the GTA 6 launch trailer and our pre-order guide.
